Baby Boy or Girl?

For Baby No. Three, we threw a reveal party.

With a due date of July 31, the arrival of our little one was fast approaching but that didn't prevent us from throwing a reveal party with seven-ish weeks to go. A classic summer pool party seemed the perfect scenario to discover baby's gender - a casual way to get friends and family together to celebrate without making the party too baby-centric. This one is our third, after all.

Hans grilled hot dogs and cheese burgers (and a few veggie patties) and I doctored up baked beans, snipped grapes into individual-sized bunches, and refrigerated the tasty (looks home-made) potato salad we ordered from Rib Hut. Some chips and dip rounded out the dinner menu. Dessert was chocolate and vanilla cupcakes with a few cookies on the side. Nothing fancy, but totally tasty.

We kept the decorations pretty simple, too, with balloons, flowers (roses, hydrangeas, and alstroemeria) from Costco and then a few paper honeycomb lanterns for pops of color outside. Our desert sun has a way of popping any outdoor balloons so paper has been the way to go for us.

With weather being in the triple digits during the party, we not only made sure that our outside seating had plenty of shade but provided a lot of seating indoors as well. Plus we served the food indoors to protect some of the food from heat exposure (here's looking at you, potato salad) and from the pesky flies. Our super large pinatas also stayed inside thereby fulfilling a dual purpose: keep the candy from melting and providing a little extra festiveness. (We got ours down on Alameda Street from Pinata Party Supplies).

Friends of ours over the years have encouraged us to invest in an inflatable bounce house -  a great source of entertainment and exercise for the children. We finally did and it was such a hit during the party! The older kids could swim while the younger ones bounced to their little hearts' content. And now we have a bounce house for our own enjoyment - and Christian's birthday in July.

Then for an added "group activity" we had a kids' pinanta filled with candy. This was a nice and easy segue into Hans busting open our Reveal Pinata.

Oh! And be sure to check out the curtains on our pergola. We (temporarily) hung them with nails the morning of the party to provide our guests with more shade. Do you know what those curtains are? (If you're all over Pinterest, like I am, then I'm sure you do). They're drop cloths! I put my dad and Hans to work hanging them and they were both so impressed with the final result. "Wow, Em," my dad kinda laughed with amazement, "These look really great. They really luxe, really elegant."

Boom. I'm excited to (one weekend soon) get them on curtain hooks and rod. And maybe we'll add a few more for symmetry and softness.

And oh yes!

WE'RE HAVING A BOY!
